🎥 Compilation by Congressman Carlos A. Gimenez on Facebook — watch the original post

Florida Congressman Carlos A. Giménez has posted a compilation of his recent media appearances, headed with the hashtag #SOSCuba and the message that the Cuban regime “is crumbling.” In the segments devoted to Cuba, Giménez develops three arguments.

On the embargo and who controls the money. Giménez argues that political change must come before economic change, and rejects the claim that the embargo explains the island’s situation: he states that the United States has never embargoed basic necessities such as food or medicine, and notes that Cuba is free to trade with the rest of the world. He then offers the figure that gives this piece its title: GAESA, the business conglomerate of the Armed Forces, reportedly holds around 19 billion dollars in reserves, while the State carries a deficit of roughly 8 billion. His conclusion: the money exists and is not used for the people because those who control GAESA are those who govern. “The ones that are in power, they have everything, and the ones that aren’t in power, they get nothing,” he says, describing it as a hallmark of communist regimes.

On Cuban subversion in the United States. Giménez welcomes the release of a State Department report on the Cuban regime’s activity on US soil and recalls known high-level espionage cases, including a US ambassador who turned out to be a Cuban agent and another person placed inside the State Department itself. He argues there have been further cases never detected, and criticizes those who still defend the regime: “there’s no freedom of speech, no elections in over 67 years.”

On the present moment. The video closes with the framing idea: “We’re hopeful that this is the beginning of the end of that regime. That regime needs to go. It’s been in power for 67 years and it’s completely wrecked the island. They don’t have any power, they don’t have any food, they don’t have any medicine.”

The compilation also includes a tribute Giménez delivered on the floor of the House of Representatives to Michael A. Caricarte, a Cuban American who arrived in Miami in 1948, a decorated colonel in the United States Army and a South Florida philanthropist, who died recently.
