Anti-Communist Movement

Martí Noticias reported the serious denunciation by exiled Cuban doctor Jesús Manuel Estévez, executive director of the Anti-Communist Movement and Defenders of Liberty, who lives in Illinois. His mother —an elderly, ill woman who lives completely alone in Guantánamo— was the victim of threats and vandalism in front of her home.

As Estévez recounted, a neighbor had to knock desperately on her door to warn her that the front of her house had been vandalized. When the elderly woman went outside, she found trash thrown at the entrance and a threat painted on the wall: “Death to the worms. Homeland or Death.” It all happened, according to the denunciation, in retaliation for her son’s political views.

“You can imagine how I felt when I got that call. I am more than a thousand kilometers away, and all I could do was listen to my mother crying, frightened, telling me what had happened. That helplessness is very hard to explain,” said the Movement’s director.

Estévez stressed that this is not an isolated incident: “This does not happen in a vacuum. In recent weeks our movement has received multiple threats and pressures, and even another of our organization’s leaders has recently reported harassment.” In his view it is a deliberate pattern: silencing activists by attacking their families on the island, so that fear forces them into silence.

Far from being intimidated, he was emphatic: “I feel that with these acts they are trying to silence us… but if that is the goal, I tell them from here that they will not succeed. They will not silence me, nor will they silence the voice of our movement.“
