In a recent segment by Cubanos por el Mundo, Alex Otaola analyzed the latest statements from Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding the situation in Cuba. According to Otaola’s interpretation, Rubio, speaking from an official stance, outlined the United States’ objective for a prosperous, tranquil, and secure Cuba. The Secretary of State indicated that the island’s fundamental problem lies in a “completely retrograde” economic system and the loss of free Venezuelan oil, much of which was resold by the regime. Rubio emphasized that the regime fears economic prosperity due to the risk of losing control over the population, and while the United States sends humanitarian aid and is willing to dialogue, change must come from the decision of those who govern, who “simply don’t want to do it.”
Otaola expressed frustration with Rubio’s seemingly solely economic focus, contrasting it with a declassified State Department report detailing Cuban threats to U.S. security, including Iranian drones, Chinese bases, and intelligence networks. Interpreting Rubio’s words “between the lines,” Otaola argued that the message is a call for the Cuban people to mobilize and demand change, as the U.S. administration cannot explicitly do so.
Given the urgency of the situation and the risk of delays due to the election year, Otaola urged the Cuban community to pressure the U.S. administration through the #DoItTrumpDoIt campaign. Members of the Anticommunist Movement and Defenders of Freedom have joined this call, encouraging the creation and sharing of videos on social media, tagging the President, the State Department, and the Pentagon, with messages such as “Do it, Trump, do it,” “Freedom for Cuba, now,” and “Cuba is next.”
